COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES DEPARTMENT

 

Social Development Sector is responsible for mobilizing and empowering communities to harness their potential, protecting rights of vulnerable groups, redresses imbalances, and takes affirmative action in favour of the disadvantaged.

The Sector mandate is “To empower communities to harness their potential through skills development, cultural growth and labour productivity for sustainable and gender responsive development”.

 Sector objectives 

Community mobilization and empowerment – empowering communities with functional skills, knowledge and information to enhance their participation in the development process, make effective decisions, access essential services and influence their perceptions in the utilization of community services.

 Enhancing Functional adult literacy–providing instruction in basic reading, writing and numeracy integrated with practical knowledge and skills for increased productivity.

Provide Non formal skills for youth-empowering vulnerable youth with practical skills mainly vocational, entrepreneurship and providing them with seed capital.

 Care and protection to orphans and other vulnerable children e.g children in conflict with the law, abandoned children and children in child labour.

Community based rehabilitation for PWDs - providing counselling, assistive devices and skills to PWDs within their communities to enable them cope with their economic and social environment.

Provide Special Grants for PWDs – to support Income Generating Activities of PWDs to provide employment, improve income status and ultimately the quality of life of PWDs.

Occupational safety and health inspections - to ensure decent working conditions in workplaces.

Resolving labour related disputes and complaints aimed at settling disagreements between workers and employers.

 Settlement of workers compensation for injury arising out of and in the course of ones employment.
